I bought my new slow cooker this summer and it is a fantastic addition to the tools in my kitchen. In fact, it is so popular with my family, that it has a permanent place on the kitchen units, just next to the microwave and it never seems to get put away in a cupboard. Now you might ask, why did I buy this machine in the summer? Surely, you might believe that this is a tool that is only used in the winter months, for all those soups and stews we need to keep warm. Well you could not be further from the truth.
One of the main reasons I bought it was to make cooking in summer less stressful. No one likes to stand over a hot stove on a lovely summer day and my slow cooker is perfect to save me from this. I can prepare the meal in the morning when the kitchen is still cool, then even when I start cooking, the cooker does not heat up the whole room, only the food inside it. In that way it saves a lot of money on electricity too. No need to heat up the whole stove - just the food that needs cooking now.
Programmable Slow Cooker
One of our favourite slow cooker dishes in the summer is Ratatouille, with fresh vegetables straight from the garden. Eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers, as fresh as possible, combined with onions and seasonings and simmered slowly all day. When the family comes home it is ready to eat. We can sit outside or in, with fresh crusty bread and a light pink wine.
Or how about a Slow-cooker lemon garlic chicken? For this dish you simply brown the whole chicken in a fry pan before it is put in the slow cooker, with the garlic and the lemon and cooked on high for four hours.
I had another fantastic idea when we were invited to a friend's BBQ. All the families were asked to bring along their favourite BBQ dish, so I prepared Boston baked beans. They go really well as a side dish for burgers and dogs. My recipe slow-cooks for 10 hours, so it was wonderful to be able to set up the recipe and then almost forget it, cooking in the slow cooker, rather than having to stand stir and stir all evening.
My programmable slow cooker helps me to plan ahead too, preparing when I have time and cooking the meal for me while I do something else.
Another time I made fresh tomato sauce using four cups of chopped tomatoes right from our garden. So I hope you can see now that summer is not the time to hide your slow cooker in the cupboard. It is so useful to bring your contribution right in the slow cooker to parties and barbecues. It will keep the food at the right temperature, and it looks so good you can serve it straight from the pot.
Of course, the traditional winter recipes work well too and the advantage for me of having a large slow cooker for our small family is that I can double the quantities and make two meals, one of which I can freeze for another day. By the way, it will warm up slowly from the freezer in the slow cooker, so keeping the flavor intact.
Low temperature cooking allows the flavors to remain and there is less chance that the food will be overcooked or burnt. Slow cooking or Dutch oven cooking was brought to the States with the settlers from Europe and was popular with cowboys and prairie hands in the Old West.
I bought my slow cooker on the internet because I knew exactly what I wanted to buy and I did not need advice or confusion from a salesman. It was great to be able to read other reviews and compare prices too.
